Pistol Fundamentals

Course Outline

Pistol fundamentals is exactly as the title says, a basic introduction to the use of your handgun. This course is designed to give new and inexperienced handgun students the skills and knowledge necessary to safely handle, draw, clear malfunctions, and shoot their handgun.  This course is based on real life applications in the employment of self defense shootings around the country.  Instructors will teach students how to problem solve their grip, presentation, and recoil control.

  • Shooting stance
  • Draw from interior or exterior holster, considerations for both
  • Handgun grip
  • Handgun presentation
  • Sight alignment, both red dot and iron sights
  • Finding the dot (if running a red dot)
  • Recoil control
  • Handgun malfunctions and how to clear them
  • Handgun manipulations
  • Strong hand vs support hand
  • Handgun reloading
  • Handgun shooting drills

Equipment Required

  • Reliable handgun
  • 3 functional magazines
  • Minimum 1 magazine pouch
  • Outer waistband (OWB) or inner waistband (IWB) style holster
  • Belt must be able to support either system
  • Eye and ear protection
  • 500 rounds of ammunition
  • Appropriate range clothing (we will train in the rain or sun)
  • Handgun cleaning equipment
